Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

  • Main character: A twelve-year-old who has appointed themselves the neighbourhood detective.
  • Setting: A café whose owner insists the table by the window is reserved for someone who never arrives.
  • Relationship: One is the other's former boss and still keeps giving instructions.
  • Weather must change: A strong crosswind makes a simple outdoor task absurdly difficult.
  • Amusing incident: A pigeon enters the room and behaves as though it belongs there.
  • Complication: The protagonist solves the practical problem but makes the social problem worse.
  • Opening rule: Begin after the main problem has already started.
  • Structure: Use a quiet reversal instead of a shock twist.
  • Dialogue: Make one character repeat a phrase with a different meaning the second time.
  • Ending rule: End with a small act of kindness that changes the tone.
  • Tone: Make ordinary events feel faintly mysterious.
  • Wildcard: Someone must mishear one word and act on it.
