Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

  • Main character: A chef who cannot taste anything for one afternoon.
  • Setting: A charity shop where the same object keeps being donated back.
  • Relationship: One character used to be the other's teacher.
  • Weather must change: The temperature drops sharply and one character is dressed for the wrong season.
  • Amusing incident: A dog steals the only glove containing an important key.
  • Complication: The only witness remembers the sequence backwards.
  • Opening rule: Start with a small mistake that initially seems helpful.
  • Structure: Make a minor detail from the opening become the final practical solution.
  • Dialogue: Give one character a habit of answering questions with another question.
  • Ending rule: End one beat earlier than feels comfortable and imply the aftermath.
  • Tone: Keep the tone warm and gently comic.
  • Wildcard: Include an animal without making it a pet.
