Constraint creates invention

Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

Your brief

  • Main character: A meticulous wedding photographer who has forgotten one crucial piece of equipment.
  • Setting: A suburban garden during a neighbourhood party.
  • Relationship: One is the other's former boss and still keeps giving instructions.
  • Weather must change: A heatwave breaks with one enormous crack of thunder.
  • Amusing incident: A voice assistant begins answering a conversation that was not directed at it.
  • Complication: The protagonist solves the practical problem but makes the social problem worse.
  • Opening rule: Open with a question not answered until the end.
  • Structure: Include one clear BUT reversal and two THEREFORE consequences.
  • Dialogue: Let one character misunderstand a perfectly clear sentence because of context.
  • Ending rule: End with a small act of kindness that changes the tone.
  • Tone: Give the story a nostalgic tone without using a flashback.
  • Wildcard: Someone must mishear one word and act on it.
