Constraint creates invention

Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

Your brief

  • Main character: A retired bus driver who knows everybody's route but nobody's secret.
  • Setting: A village hall during a fiercely competitive bake sale.
  • Relationship: They are strangers who both believe the other works there.
  • Weather must change: A thunderstorm knocks out the power for exactly seven minutes.
  • Amusing incident: A formal meeting is interrupted by an ice-cream van tune outside.
  • Complication: A message arrives containing accurate information from an untrustworthy source.
  • Opening rule: Begin with somebody trying not to laugh.
  • Structure: Use the Story Spine shape without writing the sentence starters.
  • Dialogue: Let someone change the subject twice for a reason the reader can infer.
  • Ending rule: End with someone finally asking the question the reader expected at the beginning.
  • Tone: Use restrained absurdity: nobody comments on the strangest detail.
  • Wildcard: One character wears something completely inappropriate for the weather.
