Constraint creates invention

Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

Your brief

  • Main character: A twelve-year-old who has appointed themselves the neighbourhood detective.
  • Setting: A canal lock on a windy Sunday morning.
  • Relationship: They met that morning and have already told each other one lie.
  • Weather must change: The wind stops completely at the worst possible moment.
  • Amusing incident: A character tries to whisper and accidentally activates the building intercom.
  • Complication: An object works perfectly for the wrong purpose.
  • Opening rule: Start with an object changing hands.
  • Structure: Give the protagonist two failed attempts before a successful third approach.
  • Dialogue: Give one character a habit of answering questions with another question.
  • Ending rule: End with a practical problem solved and an emotional problem newly visible.
  • Tone: Make the ending unexpectedly tender.
  • Wildcard: One important action happens offstage and is discovered through evidence.
