Constraint creates invention

Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

Your brief

  • Main character: A teenager working their first shift in a nearly empty hotel.
  • Setting: A bookshop basement during a sudden flood warning.
  • Relationship: They are old friends who have not spoken for five years.
  • Weather must change: A dense fog arrives quickly enough to hide a familiar landmark.
  • Amusing incident: A character realises they have been wearing two different shoes all day.
  • Complication: A minor rule suddenly matters because somebody has already broken it.
  • Opening rule: Open with a sentence of five words or fewer.
  • Structure: Write three short scenes separated by blank lines.
  • Dialogue: Include an apology without using the word sorry.
  • Ending rule: End with the protagonist deliberately leaving something behind.
  • Tone: Keep the dialogue brisk while the narration stays reflective.
  • Wildcard: A character must eat something while trying to make an important point.
