Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

  • Main character: A weather presenter caught outdoors when the forecast proves spectacularly wrong.
  • Setting: A cinema lobby during the final screening of an unpopular film.
  • Relationship: The two main characters are siblings who compete over everything.
  • Weather must change: A rainbow appears after an argument, but nobody is in the mood to admire it.
  • Amusing incident: A suitcase opens on an escalator and releases dozens of identical socks.
  • Complication: An object works perfectly for the wrong purpose.
  • Opening rule: Start with a small mistake that initially seems helpful.
  • Structure: Set up something in the first quarter that pays off in the last quarter.
  • Dialogue: Include a polite disagreement that becomes clearer through word choice.
  • Ending rule: End with a decision rather than an explanation.
  • Tone: Write it as dry, understated comedy.
  • Wildcard: Someone must mishear one word and act on it.
