Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

Your brief

  • Main character: A person rehearsing a difficult conversation aloud who is unexpectedly overheard.
  • Setting: A motorway service station at 2 a.m.
  • Relationship: One character used to be the other's teacher.
  • Weather must change: The temperature drops sharply and one character is dressed for the wrong season.
  • Amusing incident: A character realises they have been wearing two different shoes all day.
  • Complication: The only witness remembers the sequence backwards.
  • Opening rule: Open with dialogue, but do not identify the speaker until the second paragraph.
  • Structure: Set up something in the first quarter that pays off in the last quarter.
  • Dialogue: Include an apology without using the word sorry.
  • Ending rule: End on a line of dialogue of six words or fewer.
  • Tone: Keep the tone warm and gently comic.
  • Wildcard: One character wears something completely inappropriate for the weather.

Useful test: if a required word feels pasted in, change the story so the word causes something. The constraint should alter the plot, not decorate it.
