Constraint creates invention

Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

Your brief

  • Main character: A twelve-year-old who has appointed themselves the neighbourhood detective.
  • Setting: A remote bus stop whose electronic sign shows an impossible destination.
  • Relationship: They are strangers who both believe the other works there.
  • Weather must change: The clouds clear just as a character had relied on darkness.
  • Amusing incident: A character tries to whisper and accidentally activates the building intercom.
  • Complication: The person everybody is waiting for arrives early and overhears the wrong sentence.
  • Opening rule: Start with a small mistake that initially seems helpful.
  • Structure: Use a rule of three: two similar beats and a third that changes the pattern.
  • Dialogue: Include a truthful answer that deliberately creates a false impression.
  • Ending rule: End on a line of dialogue of six words or fewer.
  • Tone: Keep the prose optimistic even when the plan goes badly.
  • Wildcard: Someone must mishear one word and act on it.
