Constraint creates invention

Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

Your brief

  • Main character: A meticulous wedding photographer who has forgotten one crucial piece of equipment.
  • Setting: A café whose owner insists the table by the window is reserved for someone who never arrives.
  • Relationship: One character used to be the other's teacher.
  • Weather must change: The wind stops completely at the worst possible moment.
  • Amusing incident: A character realises they have been wearing two different shoes all day.
  • Complication: The only witness remembers the sequence backwards.
  • Opening rule: Open with dialogue, but do not identify the speaker until the second paragraph.
  • Structure: Give the protagonist two failed attempts before a successful third approach.
  • Dialogue: Include an apology without using the word sorry.
  • Ending rule: End with a decision rather than an explanation.
  • Tone: Use a tone of polite irritation that gradually becomes affection.
  • Wildcard: A character carries something for the whole story without opening it.
