Constraint creates invention

Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

Your brief

  • Main character: A postman carrying a letter addressed to a house that no longer exists.
  • Setting: A suburban garden during a neighbourhood party.
  • Relationship: They are neighbours who communicate mainly through notes.
  • Weather must change: A summer downpour forces several people into the same tiny shelter.
  • Amusing incident: A voice assistant begins answering a conversation that was not directed at it.
  • Complication: The character gets exactly what they asked for and immediately regrets the wording.
  • Opening rule: Start with a small mistake that initially seems helpful.
  • Structure: Use a quiet reversal instead of a shock twist.
  • Dialogue: Let someone change the subject twice for a reason the reader can infer.
  • Ending rule: End with the weather doing the opposite of the opening.
  • Tone: Keep the prose optimistic even when the plan goes badly.
  • Wildcard: Someone must mishear one word and act on it.
