Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

  • Main character: A museum guard in the final hour of their final shift.
  • Setting: A suburban garden during a neighbourhood party.
  • Relationship: The two main characters are siblings who compete over everything.
  • Weather must change: Halfway through the story, bright sunshine becomes a sudden hailstorm.
  • Amusing incident: A trolley wheel squeaks in a rhythm that sounds like a recognisable word.
  • Complication: An object works perfectly for the wrong purpose.
  • Opening rule: Start with a small mistake that initially seems helpful.
  • Structure: Use the Story Spine shape without writing the sentence starters.
  • Dialogue: Include an apology without using the word sorry.
  • Ending rule: End with the same object from the opening but give it a new meaning.
  • Tone: Use affectionate embarrassment rather than humiliation.
  • Wildcard: A clock is wrong, but consistently wrong.
