Constraint creates invention

Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

Your brief

  • Main character: A teenager working their first shift in a nearly empty hotel.
  • Setting: A suburban garden during a neighbourhood party.
  • Relationship: One owes the other a small favour that has become strangely important.
  • Weather must change: Snow begins even though the morning was unusually warm.
  • Amusing incident: A voice assistant begins answering a conversation that was not directed at it.
  • Complication: The person who could solve the problem is present but refuses to interrupt.
  • Opening rule: Begin with somebody trying not to laugh.
  • Structure: Make a minor detail from the opening become the final practical solution.
  • Dialogue: Include a truthful answer that deliberately creates a false impression.
  • Ending rule: End one beat earlier than feels comfortable and imply the aftermath.
  • Tone: Give the story a nostalgic tone without using a flashback.
  • Wildcard: The protagonist must give away something they expected to keep.
