Constraint creates invention

Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

  • Main character: A postman carrying a letter addressed to a house that no longer exists.
  • Setting: A hotel breakfast room after all the other guests have left.
  • Relationship: The two main characters are siblings who compete over everything.
  • Weather must change: A thunderstorm knocks out the power for exactly seven minutes.
  • Amusing incident: A borrowed umbrella opens inside out and reveals a ridiculous printed message.
  • Complication: An object works perfectly for the wrong purpose.
  • Opening rule: Open with a sentence of five words or fewer.
  • Structure: Let every scene end with a new decision.
  • Dialogue: Give one character a habit of answering questions with another question.
  • Ending rule: End with a callback to a phrase used earlier.
  • Tone: Make it feel like a rainy Sunday afternoon.
  • Wildcard: Someone must mishear one word and act on it.
