Medicine uses Greek-derived elements because generations of scholars and clinicians built new terminology from an established technical vocabulary. The result can look difficult, but it is often systematic. Recognising a root gives you the subject of the word; recognising the ending tells you what is happening to it.

Roots for organs and body systems

The spelling may change when elements join. Cardi- often appears as cardio-, and haem- as haemato-. The connecting vowel makes the combined word easier to pronounce.

Endings for conditions

-itis means inflammation: dermatitis is inflammation of the skin, and hepatitis inflammation of the liver. The ending identifies the type of process, not its cause.

-algia means pain: neuralgia is pain associated with a nerve. -pathy means disease or disorder: neuropathy is a disorder affecting nerves.

-osis often denotes a condition or process, but its meaning varies. Osteoporosis is a condition involving reduced bone strength; cyanosis refers to bluish discolouration associated with insufficient oxygenation.

-oma denotes a growth or tumour. It does not by itself mean cancer. The complete diagnosis determines whether a growth is benign, malignant or of another kind.

  • -graphy, the process of recording or imaging: angiography
  • -ectomy, surgical removal: appendicectomy

Gastroenteritis

  • gastr-: stomach
  • enter-: intestine
  • -itis: inflammation

The components identify inflammation involving the stomach and intestines.

Cardiomyopathy

  • cardi-: heart
  • my-: muscle
  • -pathy: disease or disorder

The term describes disease of the heart muscle. It does not specify the type or cause.

Electroencephalogram

  • electro-: electrical activity
  • encephal-: brain
  • -gram: record

The word names a recorded measurement of the brain’s electrical activity.

Greek and Latin often work together

Medical terminology is not linguistically pure. Greek and Latin elements can coexist, and some words entered through French or later scientific coinage. A familiar body part may also have separate Greek and Latin forms, used in different terms. The history matters less to practical reading than recognising the established combining form.

A root is a clue, not a clinical conclusion

Breaking down a word can reveal its broad subject and structure. It cannot tell you whether a condition is present, how severe it is or what treatment is appropriate. Use roots to understand an explanation and to ask informed questions, then rely on the full definition and professional context for the meaning that matters.

Greek is one layer, not the whole medical language
