Scientific vocabulary becomes much less intimidating when you stop reading a long word from left to right as one solid object. Many terms are built like compact definitions. A recognisable root gives you the subject, while prefixes and suffixes tell you scale, position, process or condition.
Scientific vocabulary can look forbidding because it compresses a great deal of meaning into a single term. The useful secret is that many technical words are assembled from a relatively small stock of Greek and Latin elements. Once those elements become familiar, an unknown word stops looking like a solid block and starts looking like a set of clues.
Read the word in parts
A technical term commonly contains a prefix, a root and a suffix. The root identifies the central subject, the prefix modifies it, and the suffix often tells you what kind of process, condition, instrument or field is involved.
Consider hypothermia. Hypo- means below or deficient, therm relates to heat, and -ia marks a condition. The parts do not provide every clinical detail, but they point towards a condition involving abnormally low body temperature.

Prefixes for scale, number and degree
Micro- means small and macro- means large or large-scale. Mono- means one, di- or bi- can mean two, and poly- means many. These elements appear across disciplines: a microorganism is too small to be seen unaided, a monosaccharide is a single sugar unit, and a polymer is built from repeating units.
Hyper- generally indicates above, excessive or overactive; hypo- indicates below, deficient or underactive. The contrast appears in pairs such as hypertension and hypotension. The precise threshold belongs to the specialist definition, but the prefix reveals the direction of the difference.

- endo-, inside: endoskeleton, an internal skeleton
- exo-, outside: exoskeleton, an external skeleton
- peri-, around: pericardium, the membrane around the heart

Suffixes that reveal the kind of term
-logy denotes a field of study, while -ologist identifies a person working in that field. -meter names a measuring instrument and -metry a process of measurement. -scope refers to an instrument for viewing or examining, and -graph or -gram often relates to recording or a recorded result.
Medicine also uses endings such as -itis for inflammation, -algia for pain, -ectomy for surgical removal and -pathy for disease or disorder. These are powerful clues, but they are not substitutes for a full medical definition.
Build a sensible first hypothesis
When you meet an unfamiliar term, underline the part you recognise, identify any prefix or suffix, and then combine the clues in ordinary language. For photoreceptor, you might reason: photo relates to light, and a receptor receives or responds to something, so the term probably describes a structure that detects light.
Then check the complete definition. Technical language develops conventions, historical spellings and specialised meanings that cannot always be reconstructed perfectly. Roots help you approach a word intelligently; context confirms what the word actually means.
Roots are powerful clues, not guarantees
Etymology can get you surprisingly close to meaning, but science often specialises a word far beyond its literal parts. Atom comes from a Greek idea of indivisibility even though modern physics divides atoms into smaller constituents. Use the root to form a hypothesis, then let the current scientific definition have the final word.
