Constraint creates invention

Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

Your brief

  • Main character: A weather presenter caught outdoors when the forecast proves spectacularly wrong.
  • Setting: A small airport after the final scheduled flight has been cancelled.
  • Relationship: They are strangers who both believe the other works there.
  • Weather must change: A rainbow appears after an argument, but nobody is in the mood to admire it.
  • Amusing incident: A pigeon enters the room and behaves as though it belongs there.
  • Complication: The person everybody is waiting for arrives early and overhears the wrong sentence.
  • Opening rule: Begin with somebody trying not to laugh.
  • Structure: Give the protagonist two failed attempts before a successful third approach.
  • Dialogue: Make one character repeat a phrase with a different meaning the second time.
  • Ending rule: End with a character choosing not to correct a misunderstanding.
  • Tone: Use restrained absurdity: nobody comments on the strangest detail.
  • Wildcard: A character carries something for the whole story without opening it.
