Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

Your brief

  • Main character: A postman carrying a letter addressed to a house that no longer exists.
  • Setting: A nearly empty commuter train delayed between stations.
  • Relationship: They are neighbours who communicate mainly through notes.
  • Weather must change: A rainbow appears after an argument, but nobody is in the mood to admire it.
  • Amusing incident: A trolley wheel squeaks in a rhythm that sounds like a recognisable word.
  • Complication: The character gets exactly what they asked for and immediately regrets the wording.
  • Opening rule: Start with a small mistake that initially seems helpful.
  • Structure: Give the protagonist two failed attempts before a successful third approach.
  • Dialogue: Let one character misunderstand a perfectly clear sentence because of context.
  • Ending rule: End with a callback to a phrase used earlier.
  • Tone: Keep the dialogue brisk while the narration stays reflective.
  • Wildcard: Nobody may use a mobile phone to solve the problem.
