Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

Your brief

  • Main character: A junior accountant who notices one absurd number nobody else questions.
  • Setting: A cinema lobby during the final screening of an unpopular film.
  • Relationship: One owes the other a small favour that has become strangely important.
  • Weather must change: A strong crosswind makes a simple outdoor task absurdly difficult.
  • Amusing incident: A voice assistant begins answering a conversation that was not directed at it.
  • Complication: The obvious route is closed for a reason nobody can explain.
  • Opening rule: Open with a sentence of five words or fewer.
  • Structure: Let every scene end with a new decision.
  • Dialogue: Let one character misunderstand a perfectly clear sentence because of context.
  • Ending rule: End with the weather doing the opposite of the opening.
  • Tone: Make it feel like a rainy Sunday afternoon.
  • Wildcard: A clock is wrong, but consistently wrong.
