Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

Your brief

  • Main character: A gardener who discovers someone has been moving the garden gnomes at night.
  • Setting: A small airport after the final scheduled flight has been cancelled.
  • Relationship: They divorced years ago and are unexpectedly good at solving practical problems together.
  • Weather must change: A rainbow appears after an argument, but nobody is in the mood to admire it.
  • Amusing incident: A folding chair collapses very slowly during a serious speech.
  • Complication: A stranger offers useful help that creates a new obligation.
  • Opening rule: Open with dialogue, but do not identify the speaker until the second paragraph.
  • Structure: Make the midpoint change what the protagonist thinks the problem is.
  • Dialogue: Make one character repeat a phrase with a different meaning the second time.
  • Ending rule: End with a practical problem solved and an emotional problem newly visible.
  • Tone: Keep the prose optimistic even when the plan goes badly.
  • Wildcard: Nobody may use a mobile phone to solve the problem.
