Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

Your brief

  • Main character: A nervous magician whose best trick only works when nobody is watching.
  • Setting: A motorway service station at 2 a.m.
  • Relationship: They are strangers who both believe the other works there.
  • Weather must change: The temperature drops sharply and one character is dressed for the wrong season.
  • Amusing incident: A character sends a sarcastic message to the person they were talking about.
  • Complication: One character realises the plan depends on a promise they never actually made.
  • Opening rule: Begin with somebody trying not to laugh.
  • Structure: Use the Story Spine shape without writing the sentence starters.
  • Dialogue: Include a polite disagreement that becomes clearer through word choice.
  • Ending rule: End on a line of dialogue of six words or fewer.
  • Tone: Keep the tone warm and gently comic.
  • Wildcard: A clock is wrong, but consistently wrong.

Useful test: if a required word feels pasted in, change the story so the word causes something. The constraint should alter the plot, not decorate it.
