Constraint creates invention

Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

Your brief

  • Main character: A chef who cannot taste anything for one afternoon.
  • Setting: A bookshop basement during a sudden flood warning.
  • Relationship: The two main characters are siblings who compete over everything.
  • Weather must change: A thunderstorm knocks out the power for exactly seven minutes.
  • Amusing incident: A cat chooses the exact document everybody needs as a place to sleep.
  • Complication: An object works perfectly for the wrong purpose.
  • Opening rule: Start with a small mistake that initially seems helpful.
  • Structure: Make a minor detail from the opening become the final practical solution.
  • Dialogue: Let someone change the subject twice for a reason the reader can infer.
  • Ending rule: End by revealing why an apparently comic detail mattered.
  • Tone: Make the story increasingly tense without using violence.
  • Wildcard: Someone must mishear one word and act on it.
