Constraint creates invention

Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

Your brief

  • Main character: A postman carrying a letter addressed to a house that no longer exists.
  • Setting: A quiet office on the evening before everybody moves buildings.
  • Relationship: They are neighbours who communicate mainly through notes.
  • Weather must change: A thunderstorm knocks out the power for exactly seven minutes.
  • Amusing incident: Someone's ringtone perfectly answers a question asked in the room.
  • Complication: The character gets exactly what they asked for and immediately regrets the wording.
  • Opening rule: Open with dialogue, but do not identify the speaker until the second paragraph.
  • Structure: Make the final choice solve one problem while leaving another unresolved.
  • Dialogue: Use no dialogue tags for a six-line exchange; voice alone must identify speakers.
  • Ending rule: End with a callback to a phrase used earlier.
  • Tone: Use a tone of polite irritation that gradually becomes affection.
  • Wildcard: Nobody may use a mobile phone to solve the problem.
