Constraint creates invention

Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

Your brief

  • Main character: A dog walker entrusted with a dog that refuses to pass one particular house.
  • Setting: A canal lock on a windy Sunday morning.
  • Relationship: They are colleagues competing for the same promotion while trying to behave graciously.
  • Weather must change: The rain ends suddenly, revealing something hidden by the water.
  • Amusing incident: A character sends a sarcastic message to the person they were talking about.
  • Complication: A stranger offers useful help that creates a new obligation.
  • Opening rule: Begin with somebody trying not to laugh.
  • Structure: Let every scene end with a new decision.
  • Dialogue: Include a truthful answer that deliberately creates a false impression.
  • Ending rule: End with a callback to a phrase used earlier.
  • Tone: Use a tone of polite irritation that gradually becomes affection.
  • Wildcard: A character carries something for the whole story without opening it.
