Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

  • Setting: A remote bus stop whose electronic sign shows an impossible destination.
  • Relationship: They are colleagues competing for the same promotion while trying to behave graciously.
  • Weather must change: The temperature drops sharply and one character is dressed for the wrong season.
  • Amusing incident: A borrowed umbrella opens inside out and reveals a ridiculous printed message.
  • Complication: A stranger offers useful help that creates a new obligation.
  • Opening rule: Begin with the main character counting something.
  • Structure: Make a minor detail from the opening become the final practical solution.
  • Dialogue: Include an apology without using the word sorry.
  • Ending rule: End one beat earlier than feels comfortable and imply the aftermath.
  • Tone: Use affectionate embarrassment rather than humiliation.
  • Wildcard: Nobody may use a mobile phone to solve the problem.
