Constraint creates invention

Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

Your brief

  • Main character: A postman carrying a letter addressed to a house that no longer exists.
  • Setting: A bookshop basement during a sudden flood warning.
  • Relationship: They are strangers who both believe the other works there.
  • Weather must change: A rainbow appears after an argument, but nobody is in the mood to admire it.
  • Amusing incident: A child confidently introduces two strangers as though they are old friends.
  • Complication: The person everybody is waiting for arrives early and overhears the wrong sentence.
  • Opening rule: Open with dialogue, but do not identify the speaker until the second paragraph.
  • Structure: Make the final choice solve one problem while leaving another unresolved.
  • Dialogue: Use one line of dialogue that means the opposite of its literal words.
  • Ending rule: End on a line of dialogue of six words or fewer.
  • Tone: Keep the dialogue brisk while the narration stays reflective.
  • Wildcard: Include an animal without making it a pet.
