Constraint creates invention

Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

Your brief

  • Main character: A postman carrying a letter addressed to a house that no longer exists.
  • Setting: A nearly empty commuter train delayed between stations.
  • Relationship: One owes the other a small favour that has become strangely important.
  • Weather must change: A thunderstorm knocks out the power for exactly seven minutes.
  • Amusing incident: A character realises they have been wearing two different shoes all day.
  • Complication: The obvious route is closed for a reason nobody can explain.
  • Opening rule: Open with dialogue, but do not identify the speaker until the second paragraph.
  • Structure: Give the protagonist two failed attempts before a successful third approach.
  • Dialogue: Include a conversation in which neither person directly says what they want.
  • Ending rule: End on a line of dialogue of six words or fewer.
  • Tone: Make ordinary events feel faintly mysterious.
  • Wildcard: Include a list of exactly three items that later matters.
