Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

  • Main character: A meticulous wedding photographer who has forgotten one crucial piece of equipment.
  • Setting: A nearly empty commuter train delayed between stations.
  • Relationship: One is the other's former boss and still keeps giving instructions.
  • Weather must change: A strong crosswind makes a simple outdoor task absurdly difficult.
  • Amusing incident: A borrowed umbrella opens inside out and reveals a ridiculous printed message.
  • Complication: The protagonist solves the practical problem but makes the social problem worse.
  • Opening rule: Open with dialogue, but do not identify the speaker until the second paragraph.
  • Structure: Use the Story Spine shape without writing the sentence starters.
  • Dialogue: Include a polite disagreement that becomes clearer through word choice.
  • Ending rule: End with a decision rather than an explanation.
  • Tone: Make the story increasingly tense without using violence.
  • Wildcard: A character must eat something while trying to make an important point.
