Constraint creates invention

Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

Your brief

  • Main character: A dog walker entrusted with a dog that refuses to pass one particular house.
  • Setting: A remote bus stop whose electronic sign shows an impossible destination.
  • Relationship: They are cousins who remember the same childhood incident in completely different ways.
  • Weather must change: A rainbow appears after an argument, but nobody is in the mood to admire it.
  • Amusing incident: Someone's ringtone perfectly answers a question asked in the room.
  • Complication: A minor rule suddenly matters because somebody has already broken it.
  • Opening rule: Open with a sentence of five words or fewer.
  • Structure: Use a rule of three: two similar beats and a third that changes the pattern.
  • Dialogue: Use no dialogue tags for a six-line exchange; voice alone must identify speakers.
  • Ending rule: End with the weather doing the opposite of the opening.
  • Tone: Use restrained absurdity: nobody comments on the strangest detail.
  • Wildcard: A character must eat something while trying to make an important point.
