Constraint creates invention

Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

Your brief

  • Main character: A postman carrying a letter addressed to a house that no longer exists.
  • Setting: A bookshop basement during a sudden flood warning.
  • Relationship: They are strangers who both believe the other works there.
  • Weather must change: Fine drizzle follows the protagonist everywhere despite a dry forecast.
  • Amusing incident: A cat chooses the exact document everybody needs as a place to sleep.
  • Complication: A message arrives containing accurate information from an untrustworthy source.
  • Opening rule: Open with a sound before describing its source.
  • Structure: Include one clear BUT reversal and two THEREFORE consequences.
  • Dialogue: Let someone change the subject twice for a reason the reader can infer.
  • Ending rule: End with a callback to a phrase used earlier.
  • Tone: Keep the prose optimistic even when the plan goes badly.
  • Wildcard: A character carries something for the whole story without opening it.
