Write the story you would not have invented by yourself.

Every challenge combines unrelated ingredients on purpose. Your job is not to mention them mechanically—it is to make them feel as though they always belonged in the same story.

  • Main character: A postman carrying a letter addressed to a house that no longer exists.
  • Setting: A canal lock on a windy Sunday morning.
  • Relationship: One character admires the other, who has completely misunderstood why.
  • Weather must change: A rainbow appears after an argument, but nobody is in the mood to admire it.
  • Amusing incident: A formal meeting is interrupted by an ice-cream van tune outside.
  • Complication: A deadline becomes thirty minutes earlier.
  • Opening rule: Open with dialogue, but do not identify the speaker until the second paragraph.
  • Structure: Set up something in the first quarter that pays off in the last quarter.
  • Dialogue: Include a truthful answer that deliberately creates a false impression.
  • Ending rule: End with a callback to a phrase used earlier.
  • Tone: Give the story a nostalgic tone without using a flashback.
  • Wildcard: One important action happens offstage and is discovered through evidence.
